Happy January. I’m just back from two glorious weeks in paradise feeling recharged and ready to bring Piper and Dune to the next level in 2024. While I was with my family in our favorite seaside destination of Anguilla- located in the British West Indies, Sophia, Emma, Rachael and Amanda were busy transforming the store from Christmas to Valentine’s Day and restocking the store with some old and new favorites. Many of you have been asking about my trip to Anguilla. We’ve been traveling there for years and it’s where we go for quiet time; for us it's always a restorative vacation destination where we do little more than sleep, read, listen to live music, eat some delicious food and cocktails, swim in the beautiful water, and rest on some of the best beaches in the world. I’m always sad to leave the island. As I think about the rhythmic sounds of waves crashing on the shore and how they create such a natural and soothing soundtrack, I remind myself how important it is to try and find solace and calm when I return home too. 

Experts say that the vastness of the ocean and the horizon stretching beyond our eyes sight can induce a sense of perspective and insignificance, putting daily worries into context. The open space and lack of visual clutter contribute to a feeling of freedom and openness, allowing us to clear our minds and focus on the present moment

Engage all your senses… There’s just something special about the beach.. the smell of salt in the air, the touch of the sand beneath your feet, and the sight of the ever-changing waves all contribute to a sensory-rich experience that can be both grounding and therapeutic as well as walking along the shore, which promotes exercise and enhances our overall well-being. Sunlight exposure at the beach can also boost our vitamin D levels, contributing to improving our moods.

In essence, the beach hits us on all levels. It's a place where we can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, reconnect with nature, and find a sense of peace and tranquility. However, if you can’t make it to the beach, then consider bringing elements of the beach into your own living space through decor, smells of the sea (lotions, soaps…), with objects like our ocean boards and ring dishes etc. Tap into these positive associations and create a calming oasis in your own home.

So, consider adorning your living space with nautical or lake elements like driftwood, seashells, pillows and marine-inspired artwork. By incorporating decorative accessories, you're not just filling your space with aesthetically pleasing items; you're curating an environment that nurtures a sense of calm and relaxation. Your space can serve as a place for your daily escape, offering a mental retreat from the stresses of everyday life too.

Whether it's seashell-patterned throw pillows, coastal wall art, or even a carefully selected aquarium, each piece contributes to the creation of your personal oasis. The beauty of the decor you choose lies in its versatility – you can adapt it to any living space, be it a cozy apartment in the city or a suburban home. It will act as a gentle reminder to slow down, breathe, and appreciate the simple pleasures of life. 

So, go ahead and infuse your surroundings with the coastal vibes that resonate with you, because happiness is not bound by geography – it can be found in the little things that make your heart feel at home.
